Dental checkups are very important in maintaining good oral health and hygiene. Even if you are not experiencing any pain, discomfort or issues with your teeth and gums a regular checkup by your dentist can catch problems early or even prevent more serious problems occurring in the future.

What to expect at a Dentist Check up

When you arrive at our clinic you will be greeted by our friendly staff and asked to make yourself comfortable in the patient waiting room. After a short wait, you will be invited into the dental examination room where you will meet your dentist and be offered a seat in our very comfortable dental chair. Your dentist will discuss your dental issues and concerns with you prior to beginning an exam.

During the exam X-rays will be taken of your teeth and jaw bone. This allows the dentist to see if there are any issues below the surface that otherwise might not be detected.

The dentist will also conduct an oral examination of your teeth and gums to see if there are any problems that need to be addressed.

Any issues discovered will be discussed with you and if necessary the dentist will be able to point out the issue on your Xray results or by using a small camera and displaying the image on a screen beside you.

The dentist will then make recommendations for treatment and/or good oral health routines to follow in the future. You will also have the option to ask any questions you may have.

What do dentists look for in a check up

Your dentist will be looking for tooth decay and cavities, discolouration of the teeth, chips and cracks, gum disease and if issues below the gum line need addressing.

Your dentist will also check for signs of oral cancer and for misalignment in your bite.

Why it is worth having regular check ups

Regular dental check ups provide the opportunity to discover problems early enough to treat them with the least invasive treatments and also prevent more serious dental problems in the future.

Cavities and tooth decay can be discovered early and filled eliminating the need for root canal treatment and crowns in the future. Gum disease which causes tooth loss can also be discovered and treated to save your natural teeth.

The goal is to save your natural teeth and preserve your oral health for as long as possible. A regular visit to the dentist is very beneficial.
