What Is the PRSI Treatment Benefit Scheme?

The Treatment Benefit Scheme, run by the Department of Social Protection, offers one fully covered dental exam per calendar year, plus subsidised cleaning (scale & polish) or a deeper periodontal treatment as needed. We submit the claim on your behalf.

Who Qualifies for PRSI Dental Entitlements?

Eligibility depends on your PRSI contribution record, which varies by age:

• Under 21’s and Ages 21–28: Typically need 39 contributions. 
• Ages 29–65: Usually 260 contributions in total, with 39 in the relevant year, or structured contributions over the last two to three years.
• 66 years and over: Special rules apply, but generally require 260 total contributions plus recent paid/credited contributions. 

Dependent spouses or civil partners may also qualify on your PRSI record under certain circumstances.

What Treatments Are Covered?

• Annual Dental Exam: Fully covered, no cost to you.
• Scale & Polish: €42 subsidy; balance capped at €15. 
• Periodontal Treatment: Deep cleaning when clinically necessary; €42 subsidy applies, but balance not capped.  

Note: Restorative treatments like fillings, crowns, or extractions aren’t covered under this scheme.

How to Book and Check Eligibility

Contact our reception to schedule your PRSI appointment.

Provide your PPS Number and Date of Birth. We’ll verify eligibility for you.  

We’ll submit your claim; if approved, you will receive the exam and cleaning at subsidised rates. If pending, we’ll adjust your bill once confirmed.

• What should I expect during my appointment? A complete oral exam by a dentist, followed by the recommended cleaning or gum treatment.

• Can children use PRSI entitlements? No, PRSI dental benefits apply to contributors, self-employed, retirees, or eligible dependents.
